Gearing opinions

Postby texracer45x2 » Wed Sep 13, 2017 10:30 pm

First I know that gearing effects cars different from one car to another but I'm curious about others opinions on subject. I run the LO206 Motor and weigh 370 lbs with driver. Do you think running MORE gear would help the consistency of car?? I have 6.40 in car now but have gearing that I could go 7.50. Curious on everyone's thoughts.

The main issue with playing in the clutch or gearing is the 6100 rpm rev limiter. To drop to 7.50 you might hit the 6100 before the finish. If you have an OD clutch and set up right to go into overdrive then you be ok. Are you running 11.90 or 13.90? The lower mile per hour of the 1390 can take a lower gear if that makes sense.

I've run an Lo206 since last year , last year we ran a 7.50 gearing with a #415 chain set up , and we ran a best of 12.67@43mph , and it would be on the limiter from 50ft onwards.
This year I've changed to a 6.16 gearing , changed the coil to the blue coil , and we now run 11.90's at 52mph , it revs just over 6300 , we run around 340 pounds with driver.
I think if we went up another 1 or 2 teeth on the front sprocket we'd probably drop back below 6100rpm.
But the car 60ft's around 2.43-2.47 , and I feel it helps my brothers reaction time.

I've always ran 6.00 to 6.50 gear ratio. You can also tighten up the driven 1 hole.
Let's go fast and be safe at it. Thanks to Ken Dabney, TintMaster, Mike George, Wayne Thornton and Thornton Motorsports for all there help guiding me into this new sport.

We ran a 5.73 gear and would still brush the rev limiter...but it was much better than when we ran 6.36. We would launch at 3050 to keep it from hitting too hard. 60' time was around 2.89. 18-28-22 with 14g. Black Primary Spring, Yellow Secondary 38 helix.
